At IT²EC (24-26 April) 2023 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, BAE Systems announced a new team member joining its Odyssey project. Launched in 2022 to bring expertise in military training with technology from a range of leading companies, Odyssey is set to develop next generation training for the forces of tomorrow.

The BAE Systems-funded Odyssey project brings together UK experts in simulation, supercomputing, data analytics, augmented and virtual reality which include Inzpire and Pennant, to create a single synthetic environment, enabling air, land, sea, space and cyber forces to plug in and train together. A single synthetic environment allows military forces across all domains to regularly and securely train in a virtual world, gaining crucial battlefield experiences without the challenges and constraints of live collective training and its limited warfare scenarios. Gaming technology and Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) will be important ingredients in future military training concepts.

At IT²EC 2022, BAE Systems announced its first partnership with Hadean, and in less than a year it has built a collective of agile, innovative companies which are powering the next generation of training ambitions.

Hadean has developed a robust and persistent central simulation that can exploit proven metaverse infrastructure technology to federate legacy and novel training systems, and their respective data feeds, into an immersive single synthetic environment. Over the course of six phases, from project launch in June 2022, the company demonstrated the solution’s capability to blend and scale different 2D, 3D and Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) components of land collective training, aggregate data and stream training outcomes in real-time.

Plexsys Interface Products UK is the latest member of the Odyssey project which will strengthen the team behind its single synthetic environment. Plexsys is a modelling and simulation (M&S) software company with over 30 years’ experience of delivering LVC training, readiness solutions and innovation.

Having delivered a proof of concept demonstration which validates the capabilities of the single synthetic environment, Phase 2 of the Odyssey project that will be focussed on research and development will be concluded by March next year. Phase 3 of the programme is chiefly focusing on potential customers needs.
