Northrop Grumman announced its introduction of a new version of its widely fielded M230 30mm Bushmaster Chain Gun, which has the capability of drawing from two separate ammunition feeds. 

Dual feed is a common feature and considered highly desired in most auto-cannon employed on ground combat vehicles. Being adapted to dual feed allows the gunner to select the best between two different ammunition types in engaging a target. The capability significantly enhances the flexibility of the cannon in addressing the various threats on the battlefield.

For instance, in the case of the M230 30mm the XM1198 high explosive, dual purpose round can be available in one feed for use against armoured targets. For troop and drone engagement the other feed with the XM1211 proximity fuse round can be selected. This selection made by the gunner is immediate assuring optimum destructive effect for the target engaged.

The dual feed capability has been standard on other Northrop Grumman Chain Guns in 25mm, 35mm, and 50mm calibres like the M242 used in the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle that are designed for ground vehicle use.

The 30mm X113 M230 was originally designed to arm attack helicopters like the AH-64 Apache. In this application dual feed was not a priority requirement.

However, the M230 has in the last decade been increasing been introduced on various vehicles in remote weapon stations. It has particularly been viewed as a preferred armament able to provide a counter-UAS capability.

Dave Fine, Vice President of Armament systems at Northrop Grumman stated “this next-generation cannon will empower operators to quickly respond to threats. This chain gun is the latest in our Bushmaster line to deliver reliable, multi-mission capabilities addressing the evolving threat environment.”

The new dual feed model has sixty-percent parts commonality with the current single feed version.

The dual feed M230LF is scheduled to begin live-fire demonstrations in early 2025. Its maturity allows for its incorporation in operational testing as well. Such tests will validate its compatibility with current mounts and further establish the tactical benefits of the dual feed capability of the weapon system in its current and projected roles.
