NASAMS HMMWV Firing Raytheon

Kongsberg expects to commence deliveries of NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) to the Luftforsvaret (Royal Norwegian Air Force) by 2018, the company has told armadainternational.com.

The news follows an announcement on 6th February by the country’s Ministry of Defence of a $115 million order for the system, which will be mounted on United Defence/BAE Systems M-113 family tracked armoured personnel carriers to provide mobile air defence for Forsvaret (Norwegian Army) units.

The NASAMS uses a ground-launched version of the Raytheon AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) active radar homing weapon. It is used in concert with the Raytheon AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel X-band (8.5-10.68GHz) ground-based air surveillance radar and optronics tracker.

The NASAMS is fielded by six other countries including Finland and recently Lithuanian which announced on 2nd May 2016 its intent to acquire is four batteries.
